Power BI Premium P-SKUs retire at the end of your agreement term
Microsoft retires Power BI Premium P SKUs at the end of each customer's agreement term; the subscription isn't renewable.
Who’s affected
Any team running Power BI Premium P1–P5 capacity, especially those on an Enterprise Agreement. P-SKUs cannot be renewed once your current agreement term ends, so you must move to another capacity SKU such as Fabric F-SKUs.
Not affected: Teams on Pro or PPU per-user licensing only, or on Fabric F-SKUs already. EA customers whose term is still far off can keep renewing P-SKUs annually until the EA term ends.
What it costs
The record gives no prices, so the impact depends on how your current P-SKU capacity maps to a replacement SKU and what your new agreement lists. Expect effort for sizing, migrating workspaces and re-contracting, plus risk of paying overlap while you run both.
When to act
The effective date is your own agreement end date, and moving capacity workspaces needs sizing, testing and procurement; after the term, 30 days of grace, then throttling, then rejection at day 91+.
Blast radius: Premium capacity workspaces, scheduled refreshes, paginated reports, embedded content and any service principals or gateways tied to the capacity can break or throttle if the term lapses. Also check Premium-only features in use, XMLA endpoints, deployment pipelines, and contract or procurement paperwork.
What should you do? decision tree
- you don't know when your P-SKU agreement or EA term endsPull the contract end date from your Microsoft agreement or admin portal today; it sets your whole timeline.
- your term ends within about 6 monthsStart sizing an F-SKU equivalent now, and plan a pilot migration of a few workspaces before the end date.
- you are on an active EA and your term ends laterYou can renew P-SKUs annually until the EA term ends; use the time to plan the move and align it to the EA renewal.
- you want to leave the Microsoft capacity modelEvaluate other BI platforms now; a re-platform takes far longer than a SKU swap and must finish before the term ends.
- none of the above fits, or you miss the dateDo not rely on grace or throttling: they are a safety net, not a migration window, and all operations are rejected from day 91.
Options
- WaitIf you are on an active EA, keep renewing P-SKUs annually until the EA term ends and plan the move for then.
- OptimizeRight-size before moving: audit capacity use and retire idle workspaces and datasets so you buy a smaller F-SKU.
- MigrateMove capacity workspaces to Fabric F-SKUs ahead of your term end, starting with low-risk workspaces.
- Re-architectReassess your BI stack: consider per-user licensing or another platform if capacity is mostly underused.
